Secret Garden Brighton wedding photography

“We booked Pippa very last minute for our wedding and we are so pleased we did. Pippa was really accommodating and flexible with the timings we wanted. We didn’t really want to have to go off for pictures for hours and Pippa was very understanding of this. She took the group ones and individual ones we asked for and then let us enjoy our day whilst taking natural lovely pictures of us and our guests. The pictures themselves are absolutely incredible. We have had so many people comment on how beautiful they are and they have captured our day so well. She did exactly what we wanted and we are so grateful that we had Pippa to do our wedding pictures and would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a wedding photographer.”

Tucked away in the hip west end of Kemp Town village lies a secret location not many people know about. Even locals. It’s a wedding venue which oozes charm, character, and sculptures from local artists. It combines all this to make a stunning city venue and one I was looking forward to photographing at for the first time.

The back story of Brighton’s secret garden

I have two history degrees under my belt so anything historical in my city I love to learn about! This garden originally belonged UK’s Prime Minister Robert Peel’s brother in 1830 who lived in the prestigious Sussex Square. Most of the houses there had a garden attached to it which you accessed through a tunnel. This is the only one remaining. The Secret Garden was purchased in 1950 by the Antony Dale family. It was cared for by Antony and his wife Yvonne. Rather than sell it for development, it was her wish that it should remain as a haven for the local community and for artistic purposes. It’s open to the public in the summer and is now run by Antony Dale Trust, a UK registered charity. Currently on display are the monumental sculptures of David Breuer-Weil. Right, enough of the historical info!

The wedding

Hannah and Jack wanted a very low key wedding. In fact so low key they initially didn’t even want a photographer. But on seeing photographs from a friend’s wedding just weeks before their big day they changed their minds. Thankfully I was free and all they wanted was to have informal documentary style photographs that captured their ceremony, friends and family. Everyone was super welcoming on this gorgeous hot day and the smiles tell the story of how happy these two are!

Golden hour

I left Hannah and Jack to enjoy their reception and meal in the afternoon and went back for the glorious golden hour that awaited them. This stunning venue in Ditching sadly isn’t offering wedding parties anymore (the couple knew the owners) so it made it extra special to be capturing golden hour backing onto this beautiful Sussex vineyard.

Congratulations Hannah and Jack and thanks for having me. x
